New ground mic..

Got to use this Guttermann ground mic this week. 10 out of 10 for ease of use, although i was unable to find the leak i was looking for. The closed cup earphones were clear and comfortable.

Want one of these..

Aquascan 7000

A couple of pics..

This is the scene of a 'dig', as you can see, a lot of water!

The digging team had to use the digger bucket to stop the leak turning into a 'water feature!'

See what I mean....!

This leak was found after loggers were deployed and with the sound data we were able to localise the leak to within 10m. As this was on a busy street I was asked to attend just in case of problems, I don't usually get to see the results of my work, only statistics on night flows and if it goes 'wrong', i.e dry holes..

Leak detection - the first couple of months.

Settled in to the world that is 'the East Midlands' now and have found some leaks. First thing that I had to get my head around was the level of leakage in the area and how much work you can put into finding one leak, that and getting used to the kit I have been issued.
Here is a rough list-
Micro corr6 Correlator- Not the best in the world, but it will do.
C-scope Cat and Gennie- Great, no complaints.
PPE Kit-signage high vis jacket, etc,
Listening stick,
stop tap key.
Shovel,
Hand pump,
Lump hammer,
Prizing bars,
Valve key.
And a Fiat Fiorino Van.
The first Dma pack I was issued was a rural one, with three main villages and plenty of leaks. All the pipework was cast iron, which the sound travels well through. The only set back is that if a leak is noisy, then it can mask any other leaks in the area. These leaks should be repaired asap so the area can be re-surveyed.
Recently I have had a DMA which has been giving strange leak sounds. An old man who stopped to talk to me one morning said that the road is built on sand; and that leaks have a habit of washing the sand away, resulting in subsidence. This has put me on a mission to try to nail one of these leaks. The sound of the leak is being masked by the water around the leak making it hard to correlate. We are going to try and get it with a ground mic, the result of this I will let you know.

Hello

Welcome to my leak detection blog. I am just about to start a 5 month contract of detection work in Kettering. I will highlight my findings here; and hopefully, if i'm still in the area, build up an overall picture of the general health of the water supply network in Kettering.
Firstly I have to go and introduce myself to the leakage team and pick up my tools/uniform/van. This means travelling up to Northampton the day before by train and staying in a hotel.
Can't wait to get my first DMA (what we call a metered area, an area that we know has a certain ammount of useage), and start investigations.
So until then i will say goodbye,
The Leak monkey.
